We exclusively source our leather from trusted tanneries with generations of expertise located in Illinois, Missouri, and Pennsylvania. By doing so, we not only guarantee the highest quality craftsmanship but also actively support American businesses, worker conditions, and ethical practices.
Furthermore, our unwavering commitment to using only full-grain leather underscores our dedication to delivering products that are exceptionally durable and of the utmost quality.
What Materials Go Into Our Products?
LEATHER
At BSC, our commitment to quality and sustainability is evident in every piece of leather we use. All the leather we purchase is sourced as a byproduct of the meat and dairy industry, ensuring that no part goes to waste. We exclusively employ top-grain leather, recognized as the highest grade in contrast to complete, genuine, and bonded leather varieties (read more on grading here). This choice ensures that our leather goods boast exceptional quality, durability, and longevity
Furthermore, we source our leather through two distinct tanning processes: chrome tanning, known for its soft texture, water resistance, and suitability for crafting bags; and vegetable tanning, an ancient method of creating thicker leather, ideal for belts, knife sheaths, saddle bags, and more. This results in leather goods that age beautifully, developing a rich patina over time, ensuring longevity and character in each product.
THREAD & STITCHING
For hand stitching, we employ the time-honored saddle stitch method, using waxed thread that ensures both endurance and robustness. For machine stitching, we rely on a Cobra Class 4 machine, utilizing high-quality Bonded Nylon thread with exceptional UV resistance and mildew resistance, available in size 138 and 277.
Hardware
We primarily use solid brass and copper rivets, and even our nickel options are made from solid brass with nickel plating, ensuring unbeatable strength. Our zippers are exclusively high-quality YKK, guaranteeing the longevity of every aspect of our products.
Conditioning
We employ three leather conditioners - Montana Pitch-Blend, Smith's, and Skidmore's. Leather batches can react differently to conditioners, potentially affecting color. We conduct tests on each hide with all three brands to determine the best fit.
